Part II Reading Comprehension(35 minutes,40 points)

Directions:There are 4 passages in the part. Each passage is followed by 5 questions orunfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A,B,C and D·Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the centre of the letter that indicates your choice.

Passage One

When l was learning calligraphy(书法),my teacher told me a story.

A calligrapher taught handwriting. One of his students who often practiced handwriting with old sheets of newspaper complained that he made very little progress though he had learned it with the calligrapher for a long time. His teacher said to him,“Try to use the best paper.Maybe you’11 write better.’’

The student did as he was told. It really worked. He made headway not long afterwards and felt curious. He asked his teacher about the reason. The calligrapher answered,“When you used old newspaper to practice handwriting, you would think you were writing a draft. It didn’t matter if you wrote badly as old newspaper was plenty in supply. In that case you wouldn’t pay much attention to it.Now you use the best paper and you’U treasure it.Each time you write you feel strongly about the raritv of chances and you’11 devote to it with all your heart and soul;you’11 do the handwriting muchmore attentively than practicin9.Of course you’ve made rapid progress.”

Indeed,we spend our ordinary days just as they are worthless“old newspaper”. We don’t care if we scrawl and waste it,thinking that it will come endlessly--the“old newspaper” is inexhaustible. In such a mood we may pass each day by opportunities but fail to catch any of them 。

Life is not a military exercise but an actual war in which real weapons are used. In everyday life there’s no chance for us to draft. That’s because what we call“draft”actually is the ANSWER SHEET we write that cannot be changed.

Every day of life is something new ,Let us take every day as sheet of the best paper.

Passage Two

Traditionally, universities have carried out two main activities: research and teaching. Many experts wuld argue that both these activities play a critical role in serving the community. The fundamental question, however,is how does the community want or need to be served?

In recent years universities have been coming under increasing pressure from both the governments and the public to ensure that they do not remain”ivory towers”(象牙塔)of study separated from the realities of everyday life.University teachers have been encouraged, and in some cases compelled,to provide more eonrses which produce graduates with the technical skills reouired for the commercial use.If Aristotle wanted to work in university in the UK today.he would have a good chance of teaching computer science but would not be SO readily employable as a philosopher. A post-industrial society requires large numbers of computer programmers, engineers, managers and technicians to maintain and develop its economic growth but“man”,as the Bible says。“does not live by bread alone.” Apart from requiring medical and social services, which do not directlv contribute to economic growth, the society should also value and enjoy literature.music and the arts.In these cost’conscious times,it has even been pointed out in justification for the funding of the arts that they can be useful money earners.A successful musical play, for instance, can contribute as much to the Gross National Product through tourist dollars as any other things.

A.universities in the UK have produced too many good..for..nothing graduates

B.universities should stop teaching philosophy

C.high technology is now valued more than other COUrses in universities

D.universities should put more stress on computer science

19.According to the passage,literature,music and the arts __________ .
