In the United States，elementary education begins at the age of six.At this stage nearly all the teachers are women，mostly married.The atmosphere is usually very friendly，and the teachers hav now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested.The old authoritarian(要服从的)methods of education were discredited(不被认可)rather a long time ago—so much SO that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than giving them actual instruction.

Bare roads had been replaced by sleek，newly paved highways running from Shanhai to Nanking，to my smaller home city，Wuhu.Untike the changes I had heard of and expected in Shanghai，Wuhu was much more of a surprise.The small city where l was born had grown up as I have.There are large high—rise buildings，each ringed with smaller buildings around it，many of these apartment complexes.Little seemed familiar and l wonder what my grandparents’
