One of the most dangerous drugs for pregnant women to consume is alcohol. Because alcohol is delivered quickly into the blood and passes quickly into the tissues and membranes, the human fetus (胎儿)is particularly vulnerable to its effects. In fact, the negative effects on a fetus are so pronounced that babies born after exposure to alcohol are said to be suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome.
As a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, the alcohol is passed into her bloodstream almost simultaneously. Moreover, because the bloodstream of a fetus is inextricably tied to that of the mother, the alcohol passes directly into the bloodstream of the fetus as well. And, what is more, the concentration of alcohol in the fetus is exactly the same as in the mother. For the mother, this concentration is not a problem because her liver can remove one ounce of alcohol from her system per hour. However, the fetus' s liver is not completely developed. The rate at which it is able to eliminate the alcohol from the blood of the fetus is much slower.
Eventually, the alcohol will be returned to the mother' s system by passing across the placenta(胎盘), but this process is slow. By the time this takes place, major neurological damage may have already occurred. Research has shown that little as one drink of alcohol can produce significant, irreversible damage to fetus.
Babies born after exposure to alcohol generally exhibit facial distortion, inability to concentrate and difficulty in remembering. Simply speaking, it is imperative that pregnant women avoid alcohol.

Modem mass-production methods lower the cost of making goods, and thus give us better values. At the same time, American ingenuity(独创性) and science are constantly at work improving the quality of products. In this way, better quality products at good values are continually being brought to the people of all income groups.
As an example of how this worked, when facial tissues ( 面巾纸~) were first put on the market in 1924, they were made in limited quantities and sold at 65 cents per box of 200. People liked these facial tissues immediately and began asking for them when they went into different stores.Because there was such a demand for the product, manufacturers began making tissues in larger and larger quantities. Because the manufacturers were making tissues in greater quantities, their production costs were lowered, so that the price of tissues went down. In the meanwhile, the quality of
facial tissues was constantly improving, because more manufacturers went into the business of making tissues, and each manufacturer strove to make his product better than his competitors'. Today,
instead of costing 65 cents, a box of 200 tissues costs around one-third of that price, and they are both softer and stronger.
When people are free to compete-when they are free to make more things and make them better-everyone benefits.
第36题 In regard to the production of goods in greater quantities, the author states that_____
A.the price of the goods should drop
B.the quality of the goods should improve
C.the price and the quality should both rise
D.the quality and the price should both drop
第37题 When the demand for facial tissues increased,_____
  A.the supply was quickly exhausted
  B.its price went up
C.the manufacturers tried to improve their quality
D.more manufacturers went into the business of making tissues
第38题 Improved quality of facial tissues resulted from_____
A.mass-production methods B.popular demand for a better product
C.a decrease in production costs D.competition among manufacturers
第39题 According to the passage, we can see that lower prices and better quality occur_____
A.as a result of the effect of one on the other B.always at the same time
C.independently of each other D.when the demand exceeds the supply
第40题 The author believes that in a nation where free enterprise ( 自由企业制 ) exists, manufacturers will produce_____
A.as much as they like B.better quality merchandise (商品)
C.more than they are able to sell D.both A and B
