Allthe housewives who went to the new supermarket had one great ambition: to bethe lucky customer who did not have to pay for her shopping. For this was whatthe notice just inside the entrance promised. It said: " Remember, once aweek, one of our customers gets free goods. This May Be Your Lucky Day!"
For several weeks Mrs. Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, tobe tire lucky customer. Unlike her friends, she never gave up hoping. Thecupboards in kitchen were full of things which she did not need. Her husbandtried to advise her against buying things but failed. She dreamed of the daywhen the manager of the supermarket would approach her and say," Madam,this is Your Lucky Day. Everything in your basket is free.
One Friday morning,after she had finished her shopping and hadtaken it to her car,she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea. She dashedback to the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash-desk. As she didso, she saw the manager of the supermarket approach her. "Madam," he said,holdingout his hand,"I want to congratulate you! You are our lucky customer andeverything you have in your basket is free!"

Where did the movies begin? It is often said that they are an Americaninvention. It is not entirely true. The motion picture has been the mostinternational arts. Before the dawn of the twentieth century, inventors inFrance, England and the United States were among the dozens of men who were tryingto develop ways of using photographs to create the effect of motion.
Soon after 1889, when the famous inventorThomas Edison first showed motion pictures through a device called thekinetoscope (活动电影放映机 ) other devices for the same purpose appearedallover the world. Edison had solved certain problems, making it possible forother inventors move ahead with their own devices. Every year just after Christmas theJanuary Sales start. All the shops reduce their prices and for two weeks,theyare full of people looking for bargains. My husband and I do not normally go tothe sales as we don´t like crowds and in any case are short of money as we haveto buy lots of Christmas presents.
Last year, however, I took my husband with me to the sales at thelarge shop in the center of London. We both needed some new clothes and werehoping to find a television set. When we got to Oxford Street,it was so crowdedthat we decided to split up and meet again at the underground station. So Ileft my husband and started looking around the shops.
