  Lesson 40

  Step 1 Revision

  Revise the story about Mr Green's problem in the unit, using the questions in Wb Lesson 38, Ex. 1 and SB page 39, Part 2 to guide the Ss.

  Step 2 Ask and answer

  SB page 40, Part 2. Do the first example with the whole class, then let the Ss ask and answer in pairs. Check the answers with the whole class.

  Step 3 Listening

  SB page 40, Part 1. Listening Cassette Lesson 40. Wb Lesson 40, Ex. 1. Tell the Ss Now we're going to hear Mr Green telephoning the school. Write down his message on the form. Make sure the Ss write in today's date and time on the form in the correct place before you play the tape.

  Play the tape through once and give the Ss a few moments to write down their answer. Play the tape again. Let the Ss check answers in pairs. Play the tape a third time and check the answers with the class. Finally, play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat.

  Listening text

  TEACHER: Hello! 65478 double 9.

  MR GREEN: Hello! Could I speak to the headmaster, please?

  TEACHER: I'm sorry, he isn't here at the moment. Can I take a message?

  MR GREEN: Er, yes. This is Mr Green here. TEACHER: Oh, hello, Mr Green.

  MR GREEN: Could you give him an important message, please?

  TEACHER: Certainly.

  MR GREEN: Could you please ask him to telephone me before 6 this evening? It's rather important.

  TEACHER: Of course. Er, does he know your telephone number?

  MR GREEN: Maybe. It's 893460.

  TEACHER: One moment, please, I'm getting a pen! Er, yes, OK, ready. Please give me that number again.

  MR GREEN: Yes, it's 893460.

  TEACHER: OK.

  MR GREEN: Thanks very much. Bye!

  TEACHER: Goodbye, Mr Green.

  Step 4 Speechwork

  Wb Lesson 40, Ex. 2 Speech Cassette

  Lesson 40. Play the tape for the Ss to listen and repeat. Isolate any troublesome sounds and practise them.

  Step 5 Checkpoint 10

  Go over the grammar notes. Change the sentences into the direct speech, e. g. He says, I want to see the headmaster. Ask the Ss to turn the sentence into the indirect speech so that you can have a sentence containing an object clause as the first sample sentence in Checkpoint 10. Do the same thing with the other four sentences. Discuss any problems that arise. (See SB page 125)。

  Practise the“useful expressions”and make sure the Ss understand their meaning and when to use them.

  Step 6 Test

  Say these sentences aloud. Ss have to write them down according to the He /She says…or

  They say…structure. e. g.

  T: Li Lei says,“I live in East Street.”

  Ss: (writing) Li Lei says he lives in East Street. 1 Kate says,“I like apples very much.”

  2 Han Meimei says, “My favourite colour is blue.”

  3 Lily and Lucy say, “We go to school on foot.”

  4 Jim says, “Mr Hu is my Chinese teacher. ”

  5 Miss Gao says, “I'm not very good at basketball.”

  Step 7 Workbook

  Wb Ex. 3. Do an example with the class, e. g. 1 A: He says Lucy is right. B: I think that Lucy is right. C: I hope that Lucy is right. D: I'm afraid that Lucy is right. Then Ss make up dialogues in groups of four. Get some groups to act out their dialogues.

  Wb Ex. 4 is a game. Play this game if time allows.

  Divide the class into several teams and see who can sit in the hot seat for a longer time.

  Homework

  Finish off the Workbook exercises.
