Lesson 51
Step 1 Revision
1 Check the homework.
2 Revise Christmas vocabulary.
(See TB Lesson 49, Step 1)
3 Revise the contents of Jim's letter, using the questions in Wb Lesson 50, Ex. 1 to guide the Ss.
Step 2 Presentation
Give the Ss instructions, such as Open your books. Turn to page 51. Take out a pen. Put it on your desk. etc.
Revise the instructions that you gave. Make a list on the Bb. Then go down the list, presenting this structure: I asked you to open your books. I asked you to turn to page 51.
Get the Ss to use the structure. Say What did I ask you to do? Help them to answer You asked us to …… Repeat with I told you to … You told us to …
Focus on the use of the Infinitive.
Step 3 Practice
SB page 51, Part 1. Ask individual Ss What did Jim ask/tell Ling Feng to do? What else? Go through the answers in Part 1. Explain any problems that arise, then let the Ss practise in pairs.
Step 4 Workbook
Wb Lesson 51, Ex. 1. Practise the models with the class, then let the Ss work in pairs. Get some pairs to act out their dialogues in front of the class. See if they can do it without books! These are the sentences for C to say: 1 He told you to give Polly some food every day. 2 He told you to cover her cage every day. 3 He told you to remember to clean her cage. 4 He told you to take good care of Polly. 5 He told you to give your family his best wishes. 6 She asked you not to draw on the wall. 7 She asked you not to run so fast. 8 She asked you not to forget to tell her the news. 9 She asked you not to play with fire. 10 She asked you not to read in poor light.
Step 5 Ask and answer
Briefly revise the forms of the Simple Past Tense, particularly the question forms.
SB page 51, Part 2. Which of these questions and answers contain the Simple Past Tense?
Do the first two as an example. Remind the Ss of the structure He said that … + object clause.
Let the Ss ask and answer in pairs: Get pairs to demonstrate their dialogues.
Do Wb Lesson 51, Ex. 2. The answers are:
2 A: Did they stop on the way? 3 A: Was it warm in Moscow? 4 A: Did they go into the centre of Moscow? 5 A: Have you heard from her yet?
Step 6 Practice
SB page 51, Part 3. Read through the dialogue, then get the Ss to learn it by heart.
One way is to write the dialogue on the Bb. Books closed! Divide the class into two halves to read the dialogue, A and B. Rub some words out and replace them with a dash: e.g.
A: Where's____ ?
B: He's ____to ____. (etc.)
Go through the dialogue several times. Each time, rub out more words, until there are none left, only dashes. The Ss should then know the dialogue by heart. Notice the position of not in Have you still not heard from him? It goes as close as possible to the past participle.
Draw the diagram to help explain the use of the Present Perfect Tense and the Simple Past Tense.
1 Jim is in England now.
2 He went back last week.
3 He came to China in 1990.
4 He has been to China.
Step 7 Workbook
Wb Ex. 3. Practise the model with the whole class, then let the Ss work in pairs. Get some pairs to act out their dialogue. The translation into Chinese can be done orally.
