Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life．Relationships with family，friends，neighbors，even pets，will all do the trick，but the biggest longevity boost seems to come from marriage or an equivalent relationship．The effect WaS first noted in 1 858 by William Farr，who wrote that widows and widowers(鳏夫)were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers．Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man’s life and two to a woman’s．The effect holds for all causes of death，whether illness，accident or self-harm．
Even if the odds are stacked against you，marriage can more than compensate．Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease Call expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried mall with a healthy heart．Likewise，a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn’t smoke．
There’S a flip side，however，as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouse’S death，and caring for a spouse with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems．Even S0，the odds favor marriage．In a 30-year study of more than l0 thousand people，Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects．
So how does it work?The effects are complex，affected by socio-economic factors，health-selw．ice provision，emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms．For example。social con-tact can boost development of the’brain and immune system，leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life．People in supportive relationships may handle stress better．Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner．

Passage Two
Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own．My mom was one of those people．
My father died when l was nine months old，making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen．While l was growing up，we lived a very hard life．We had little money，but my mom gave me a lot of love．Each night，she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life，“Kemmons，you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it．”
At fourteen，1 was hit by a car and the doctors said l would never walk again．Every day，my mother spoke to me in her gentle，lovi ng voice，telling me that no matter what those doctors said，I could walk again if l wanted to badly Pnough．She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her．A year later，I returned to school--walking on my own!
When the Great Depression hit，my mom lost her job．Then I left school to support the both of us．At that moment，1 was determined never to be poor again．
Over the years，I experienced various levels of business Success．But the real turning point occafred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in l95 1．1 was dissatisfied with the second—class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra$2 for each child．That was too expensive fi)r the average American family．I told my wife that l was going to open a motel for families that would never charge extra for children．There were plenty of doubters at that
time．
Not surprisingly，room was one of my strongest supporters．She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style．As in any business，we experienced a lot of challenges．But with my mother's words deeply rooted in my soul，I never doubted we would succeed．Fifteen years later，we had the largest hotel system in the world--Holiday Inn．In l979 my company had l，759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of$1 billion a year．
You may not have started out life in the best situation．But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself，nothing can stop you．
